A seriously good English sparkling wine despite the slightly frivolous name.
The lowdown:
Made in the traditional method, just as in champagne, this is a bit more than just 'bubbly'. It's made from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Muller-Thurgau, which though a little known grape these days, contributes to giving this delicate hints of honeysuckle and a zesty citrus character. Aged on its lees for 18 months to give a real richness and classic yeastiness for the modest price there's a lot to admire.
The Producer:
Bolney Estate was established back in 1972 which predates the more recent upsurge in the English wine industry. However, under Sam Linter, daughter of founders Janet and Rodney, who now heads up the winemaking operations the estate has kept its finger on the pulse of modern practices and standards. Without doubt Bolney ranks among the foremost of English wine estates in both quality and ambition and they've done much to raise the reputation of English wine as a whole. Since 2022 theyve been part of the Henkell Freixenet group, a global leader in sparkling wines.
When to drink:
Fresh and lively with a touch of richness it's perfect alongside roast chicken, or turkey.
