Description
In a nutshell:
A rich, fruity and spicy old vine, organic Carignan from a small passionate producer in St-Jean de Minervois in the Languedoc
The lowdown:
This is the top wine of Le Clos Du Gravillas and comes from a single 2 hectare vineyard of 100 year old Carignan vines. Nicole and John Bojanowski, the owners, kept them specially when they aqcquired the estate in the 1990s. Virtually no sulphur is used and the fermentation lasts around six months folllowed by a period ageing in 400 litre Allier oak barrels. The wine combines power and purity and the fruit is dark, velvety and truly delicious and seems to have soaked up a huge amount of minerals. The fruit is blueberry-ripe with liquorice swirls and hint of tobacco and discernible meaty undertones as it reaches the lively and lingering finish.
The Producer:
Clos du Gravillas a fantastic little domaine based in the hamlet of Saint-Jean de Minervois, deep in the Languedoc. Founded in the 1990s and run by local girl Nicole Bojanowski and her American husband John on completely organic principles they produce wines "that talk and help make magic moments with friends sat around a table". Their landscape is rough and rugged 'garrigue', so is great for vines. And with the vineyards on 300m high slopes the cool evening breezes help the fruit retain its natural acidity while hot summer days build good structure and depth. In some ways the domaine is a bit old school, growing tiny parcels of 15 different varieties, quite a few of which have been there a lifetime. As a result they turn out a number of different wines all of them small production and full of interest.
When to drink:
The fullness of the fruit and texture from the tannins make this good with things like a slow roasted shoulder of pork or rich breast of duck.
