Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant and refined Rioja Gran Reserva from a tradtional and respected winery.
The lowdown:
Bodegas La Rioja Alta stand shoulder to shoulder with the top producers in this region and respect the traditonal ways of making Rioja and produce a raft of really sought after wines. The 2012 vintage saw their well established Viña Arana upgraded to Gran Reserva for the first time. It's made from 95% Tempranillo with just a small amount of Graciano being blended in later in 2016 shortly before bottling. Fresh and graceful, on the nose it's got a real aromatic intensity while on the palate the soft tannins hold the ripe red fruit and balsamic notes together really well and lead to a refined, cultivated finish.
The Producer:
La Rioja Altas headquarters are in Haro, where several other iconic Rioja producers all lie within a radius of a few hundred yards. In a time when many of the regions wineries are making more contemporary wines Rioja Alta themselves remain among the leaders of the more traditional Rioja styles. Unusually among the larger producers they have significant vineyard holdings of their own which means they're not as reliant as others on bought in fruit. They make all their barrels themselves from American oak. Their Reservas, Alberdi, Arana and Ardanza, and Gran Reservas, 904 and 890, are their signature wines, the quality of which underpins their excellent reputation.
When to drink:
While it's good drinking now it also has plenty of ageing potential. Perfect with roast red meats, hearty stews and casseroles. And brilliant savoured all by itself.
